2013 Zillman Winners

Emily Lingeman, Geoffrey Ludvik, Jessica L’Roe and Rachel Silver

Emily Lingeman
, a junior majoring in biochemistry, will participate in the Summer Oxford and Cambridge Research Experience (SCORE), a program associated with the UW-Madison’s Department of Biochemistry. She will conduct full-time research in biochemistry and/or molecular biology, under the direction of a faculty member, and work as part of a research team. Emily hopes that this experience will forward her goal of becoming a biochemist. She will present her research at the UW Madison research symposium.

Geoffrey Ludvik, a senior majoring in anthropology, will participate in an archaeological research project in the Eastern Mediterranean. His research will focus on dating stone beads based upon the technology used in drilling the bead. This is a continuation of research that Geoffrey has been involved in over the course of his undergraduate years at UW-Madison. Geoffrey hopes that this experience will forward his goal of becoming an archaeologist.

Jessica L’Roe, a graduate student in geography, will travel to Brazil to study the soy moratorium and G4 Cattle Agreement and their impact on deforestation in the Amazon. Jessica hopes to further her contacts in the area and to begin laying the groundwork for her Ph.D. dissertation. She will be traveling with a group from the UW-Madison Geography Department.

Rachel Silver, a graduate student in anthropology, will travel to Malawi to visit the refugee camp at Dzaleka. Here she plans to interview the first graduating class of a distance-learning higher education initiative, in the hope of establishing a relationship with the refugees and with the group directing this initiative. Her goal is to study the challenges of delivering this program to, and its impact on, a long-term refugee population – information she will use in her doctoral dissertation.
