Claire Allen
, a junior double majoring in Anthropology and History, will be volunteering at the Adolescent Learning Centers, a free school for Muslim girls in Hyderabad, India. While there, she will also be conducting ethnographic research aimed at better understanding educational policy in India, especially as it intersects with gender and religious issues.

Julianna Arntzen, a junior majoring in Biology, will be traveling to Costa Rica with a wildlife ecology research team in order to study the margay cat. By helping to track these animals, the team hopes to be able to better manage the endangered species.

Amanda Infield, a junior majoring in Political Science, will be spending the summer in Washington, DC interning for Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner. In addition to her interning duties, Amanda also plans to conduct interviews and do primary research on American congressional politics.

Anne Lovell, a junior majoring in Biology, will travel with African Youth Outreach to an orphanage in South Africa, where she will provide HIV/AIDS education and other programming for local children. She recently founded the African Youth Outreach student organization and will be taking over as the lead instructor this summer.

Briana McGinnis, a senior majoring in Political Science, will conduct archival research at the University of Sussex, England, focusing on the work of Virginia Woolf. In particular, she will explore the use of time in Woolf’s work and political aspects of Woolf’s writing.

Mona Mogahed, a junior Communications Arts major, will be spending the summer in Cairo, Egypt to research Arab perceptions of Americans and the United States. She will be carrying out archival research and fieldwork in urban communities in order to understand Arab interpretations of news events involving the United States.

Prethy Rao, a junior Biology major, will participate in a field optical program serving underprivileged individuals in Central America. She will assist in basic eye examinations, school eye care screenings, and will receive training in clinical management.

Andrea Stitgen, a junior Biology and Spanish double major, will travel to Central America to participate in a medical program. There, she will be involved in field operations including screening for hypertension and diabetes, patient intake interview and clinical triage, and tropical medicine.

Brett Watson, a senior majoring in Political Science, Legal Studies, and African-American Studies, is a co-founder of the Student Civic Engagement Advocacy/Lobbying Coalition, a firm dedicated to state and federal policy change that promotes youth voting participation. This summer he will be traveling to Washington, DC, where he will set up an office and establish further contacts with legislators and lobbyists.
