Jun-Jei (Jason) Nu
, a PhD student in the Geography department, will be conducting site analysis research on urban development projects in Barcelona and London associated with hosting the Olympic Games. More specifically, Jason is interested in learning more about planning strategies and techniques used to produce a sense of physical security and social exclusivity in these developed zones. Jason hopes that this experience will enable him to not only create a better dissertation research proposal, but also improve his understanding of the relational dimensions of urban planning practices.

Daniel Kim, a PhD student in the History department, will be volunteering for four weeks as the principle lecturer at Yanbian University of Science and Technology in Yanji, China, a city near the border of North Korea. There he will be teaching English to a sizeable Korean ethnic minority. Daniel hopes that this experience will help him gain an understanding of the intricate Chinese-North Korean relations in Yanji.

Mary Layde, a senior majoring in Nursing and Public Health, will be spending the summer at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Nairobi, Kenya. There, she will participate in an eleven-week internship focused on research and field experience addressing important infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and injury prevention issues affecting the Global South. Mary hopes that this experience will complement her clinical nursing education and will allow her to apply the information she learned from her science courses to improve the health issues in Kenya.
