2009 Zillman Summer Research Award Winners

Brenna Knaebe, a senior majoring in Zoology, will travel to the southern Yunnan Province of China to investigate male competition in frogs. She will take this opportunity to learn specifically about tree frogs and rice frogs, and will study how each competes for habitat for breeding. As a future graduate student, Brenna wants to conduct field research to prepare her for what is ahead.

Chelsea Lauing, a senior majoring in music education, will participate in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Florence Summer Music Program. While there, she plans on having the opportunity to be a solo performer and engage in choral conducting. The latter is of special interest because she is planning a career in choral conducting.

Dayton Opel, a senior majoring in medical microbiology, will travel to Seattle, Washington, where he plans on participating in a medical observership at the Seattle Children’s Hospital Division of Emergency Medicine. Dayton will enroll in medical school in September, so he hopes to experience what life is like for physicians this summer.

Claire Rydell, a junior classics and history major, will travel to Freiburg, Germany to participate in an intensive German language and culture course. These experiences will not only help Claire improve her German, but it will also take her a step closer to being able to read the works of Nietzsche and other German scholars and philosophers.

Anna Rockwell, a senior majoring in Italian, will travel to Paris, where she will study French at the Sorbonne. There, she hopes to gain the level of expertise that would allow her to study the relationship between the French and Italian literary traditions. As a future graduate student, Anna hopes to become proficient enough in French to fulfill the graduate school requirement of being proficient in two languages.

Karlyn Tjaden, a senior double majoring in sociology and international studies, will travel to Kenya, where she will study the attitudes of the elderly Luo population toward the changes in Kenya since Independence. She will also volunteer at the Orongo Widows and Orphans Group, which will include HIV/AIDS education, office assistance and nursery assistance.

Alexander Zarley, a junior majoring in classics and classical humanities, will explore archeology by joining a team from Simon Fraser University in British Colombia at Petra, Jordan. There, he will excavate a bath and garden complex, attend lectures, and gain hands-on experience that goes beyond the classroom.
