2005 Zillman Summer Research Award Winners

Amos Briggs is a junior majoring in Political Science and Anthropology. This summer he will work as an intern in the Washington, D.C. office of Congressman David Obey, of Wisconsin’s 7 th Congressional District. Attending congressional meetings and interacting with constituents will give Amos the chance to enrich his political science studies and use his academic skills to participate in the Wisconsin political process on a national level.

Melissa Brown is a senior majoring in Political Science, Psychology, and Spanish. She will spend a month this summer working with conservationists on the Limahuli Preserves, in a remote area of the Hawaiian Islands, helping to promote the growth of the rainforests, maintain the indigenous culture of the Limahuli Valley, and communicate with political officials and local residents about the benefits of legislation to preserve the area’s resources.

Sophia Estante is a senior majoring in English Literature, Creative Writing, and Journalism. Working on an inter-disciplinary research project regarding hypertext in critical Internet studies, she will travel to the University of California-Berkeley for several days this summer to explore their unique archival resources and do hands-on work for her project.

Raymond Lam is a junior majoring in Music Performance and Computer Sciences. This summer he will be attending a music festival or camp that will allow him to further his skills as a clarinetist and a musician, both by playing in ensembles and by receiving private lessons with nationally renowned clarinet instructors.

Benjamin Mark Moss is a senior majoring in Hebrew & Semitic Studies and Integrated Liberal Studies. This summer he will travel to Israel to study both Hebrew and the culture and history of the Middle East in an immersion program at the University of Haifa. This opportunity will build upon his major studies and contribute to a potential career in international law.

Simona Rosu , a senior Biochemistry major, will participate in a program through an international volunteer project, “Volunteers for Peace”.  It’s run by the local organization ViveMexico.  She will be working for a nature reserve in Michoacan , Mexico which is famous for its monarch butterflies.  We will be doing some renovation activities (painting, planting trees, making signs, etc) as well as interacting with the local community and promoting environmental awareness.

Amelia Swanson is a senior majoring in Psychology, Spanish, and Latin American, Caribbean & Iberian Studies. She will do volunteer work in Mexico this summer, organizing and presenting workshops on culture, recreation, and environmental education to rural communities. This opportunity will allow Amelia to gain experience working with the Mexican community, and also give her the added challenge of doing this completely in Spanish.

Rishi Wadhera , a junior biology major, will travel to India to work with Combat Blindness, an organization started by a UW-Madison professor of Ophthalmology, Dr. Suresh Chandra. During his stay Rishi will be observing free health services performed by trained physicians and helping to educate families on preventing malnutrition-caused blindness. This experience will enrich his cultural and social perspectives, as well as contributing to his future career as a physician.
